Upturned quotations

Today I said to a guy on a bicycle who had been waiting beside me on the pavement for ages for the green light: 'The last will never be the first'.

He didn't get it. He didn't even take it well.

I suspect the way he sputtered away he took me for a fool.

You don't make friends with upturned quotes.
